I've been asking myself this question all week. Why? Because my wife and I had the joy of watching the Duke men's team play against Presbyterian College this past Saturday. The win turned out to be Coach K's 902 win as a head coach, setting up last night's win against Michigan State to be #903!
Since Saturday, I have been replaying in my head over and over again our time at Cameron Indoor Stadium... the excited crowd, the energizing music, the terrific play on the court... These are just some of the elements.
I could reflect on this game in a number of directions. A strong part of me continues to admire Coach K. Yes, this is true. But I must admit: I loved watching Marshall Plumlee!
Marshall is the youngest of the three Plumlee brothers playing for Duke. Unless there is a serious injury during the season, Marshall will not play for the entire year. He is practicing with the team all the time, but he's just not playing in games so that he can save his years of eligibility for when he's older and more developed. For now, Marshall gets to watch his two older brothers, Miles and Mason, play for the Dukies.
At one point of the game, I turned to my wife and said, "could you imagine how proud we would be if our two sons played basketball for Duke?" Really, if they did ANYTHING together as young men??? Now imagine THREE children!
Whenever Miles or Mason did anything good on the court, Marshall was always the loudest and most enthusiastic person cheering! He would jump up and down, grab his teammates, and yell loudly. Watching him, I felt inspired to be a father whose children will one day cheer -- to cheer with unrelenting passion and fervor -- for each other.
Insofar as my identity as a father is connected to my spiritual growth, then Saturday's time at Cameron Indoor Stadium undoubtedly inspired me!

And oh, the valuable lesson of Marshall ... Most of us want to "get in the game," but there he is cheering, practicing, waiting his turn ... but always prepared. We never know when God is going to put us in the game, but we should always be ready ... at our best!
A second thought ... if you are from Duke (or any other basketball mecca) basketball will always count towards anything that you ever want to say or do ... or think! Especially when you have a coach that is approach the status of being included in the God-head ... just don't know how to interpret a four-fold God-head?
